Camera Shy Dev Log: Week 1

Last week I started working full time on a game!

It’s a camera hopping game about hacking into a large evil corperation, uncovering and extracting the dark secrets within, deleting records, and getting to the next floor before you get discovered.

I’m working on getting the first level finished up and ready for play testers. It’s still quite early in development (I’ve only been at it for a few months,) but since starting full time on it last week, I think I’ve made some pretty good progress.

I’ll mainly use these posts to highlight what I did the past week and shoutout some helpful resources that I found along the way.

With that being said, here’s what I did this past week:

  • I redesigned the initial level to feel more like a real office. It’s a lobby floor now instead of some kind of reception floor.

The entire building should be the company you’re breaking into, so it didn’t make sense for reception to be on some random floor.

  • I modeled the initial level in blender. It was suprisingly easy. Blender improved their boolean modifier some years ago and now it’s pretty great for level design

  • I modeled (well… used MakeHuman ), rigged, and animated a human using blender and a really cool animation tool called Cascadeur. It’s like auto complete for human and bipedal poses.

As a non animator, it’s been a big help.

  • I got pretty much all of it in engine too!

    Camera Shy Lobby Test 1

  • Made path following feel smoother

  • Redesigned the hacking interactions to be cooler and to express some narrative elements

  • Spoke with a friend who’s interested in writing for the game!!!

Pretty busy week, I think. As more of the game gets fleshed out, I’m hoping I can get more done faster, since it’ll just be work at that point and less explorations.

This coming week, I’d like to get the game’s first level ready for play testers to try out and give me some feedback.

That’s all for this week! See ya next week.

You’ve landed on my blog!

Welcome!

I’ve been a programmer for over 19 years. In that time I’ve worked on games, large frontend projects, enterprise backend products, fun little tools, and generative artwork.

I use this space to talk about projects I’m currently working, show off workshops I intend to give, and rant about life and technology.
